Four Tips for a Successful "Staycation"

Summer is upon us and although we would all like to jet off to sandy beaches, water parks or Disney World it’s not always in the schedule or in the budget…but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a vacation! Whether you have a whole week or only a weekend there are many ways to “get away” and enjoy some quality family time without breaking the bank. Here are just a few…

Unplug

Turn of the cell phones, computers, tablets, televisions, gaming devices, and any other distracting gadget that we (myself included) have forgotten how to live without. We spend so much time calling, texting, updating, tweeting, checking, liking, and pinning that it doesn’t leave much for quality time. Take this chance to unplug from media and connect with your family or partner. Be 100% present for the time you have with your family; the more you put in, the more you will get.

Take a Tour

There is always something unique about the area in which you live, so be a tourist in your own city. Contact your local tourist information center get a list of local attractions and make an itinerary. There may be so much to see that you might have a hard time fitting it all in. Who knows? You might even fall in love with your hometown all over again.

Family cookingMake a Memory

Have a recipe you have always wanted to try, a room that you have been meaning to paint, or a project you know your kids would love? Well now is as good a time as any. Creating something together is a great way to spend quality time and be rewarded with an accomplishment. Get creative, work as a team, and enjoy.

Try Something New

Experiencing something for the first time is a great way to spend your vacation. Put aside some time to step outside your comfort zone and learn something new. If you would like to try cross country skiing for example you can contact a Nordic ski center to find out about lessons and renting equipment. If you have friends or family that would like to try it with you, you might even get a group rate. The more the merrier.

There are many other ways to have fun while spending little to no money, but instead spending the most important thing - quality time. What other ideas do you have??
